HLS letter to Cornelia 10-1-44 -- family, worrying, and the harbinger of worries to come
"I hope that when this reaches you, Tuck will have arrived home for awhile. It is about time and I expect him. Tell him I'm very sorry I missed him, both at Naples and Columbia. You know, I think I am getting conceited about our family. The more people I meet, the better I like it.
"I hope you are feeling better now than when I saw you last. Try to take it easy, will you please? I want you to stay in good condition so I can play you in baseball when I get back. I'm practicing a special pitch that not even your one handed batting technique can hit. And you can confine your worrying to Tuck and Dave, please. I am in N. Africa and I'll stay here for the duration (if I'm unlucky) and I'll only leave to come home. I am safer here than in California. They have earthquakes there, but the climate's the same.
"Now a favor, please. For John's birthday, I want to give him . . .; New Russia's Primer. . . subtitle is The Story of the Five Year Plan. . . . The book is written in Van Loon style by this Russian engineer, for Russian children. It was actually used in their schools to explain the purposes and plans of the 5 yr plan (1st). I think it's good and the rest of you may enjoy it.”
